Edward van Kersbergen

Founding Partner

Edward van Kersbergen (1964) is co-founder and a Managing Director of Sunrise. He recently founded serves as majority shareholder and Chairman of oil and gas exploration and production company Mazarine Energy B.V.

Mr. Van Kersbergenbegan his career in 1988 with Shell working on offshore drilling rigs as a well-site operations engineer. He fulfilled various technical and commercial roles for Shell companies in Scotland, London, Germany and Syria. In 1998 he joined Premier Oil in Singapore as the subsurface team leader for the Yetagun field, offshore Myanmar and continued as exploration and subsurface manager. In 2001, after a spell with RDS- Resource in Aberdeen as Business Development and Petroleum Engineering Director, he cofounded subsurface energy consultancy Horizon Energy Partners and served as its CEO. When it was sold to SGS in 2008, Horizon employed 100 staff and associates with offices in The Hague, Aberdeen, Abuja and Kuala Lumpur. In 2006 he founded Oyster Energy, a co-investment company for gas assets in the Dutch sector of the North Sea. This venture was sold to Elko Energy in 2009.

In 2011, Mr. van Kersbergen co-founded Sunrise. In July that year he made an initial investment in Aberdeen-based energy consultancy Xodus Group Ltd and joined as non-executive director. In December 2011, he opened an office in The Hague where he expanded the company’s service offering to become the industry’s only proposition to embrace both subsurface and surface consulting. Mr. van Kersbergen was appointed Executive Chairman of Xodus in February 2012. In that position he increased his investment in the company oversaw its rapid geographical and financial growth opening offices in the Middle East and Asia Pacific. In July 2013 he sold his shares in Xodus to engineering contractor Chiyoda Corporation. He currently serves as an advisor to Xodus Group.

In September 2013, Mr. van Kersbergen founded Mazarine Energy B.V. Mazarine Energy is a subsurface-driven private oil and gas exploration and production company focused on early-stage exploration and field development. The company concentrates on areas that have attracted limited interest of the oil majors and traditional independents. Mazarine Energy is currently active in North Africa, where it has a majority operating interest in an onshore license in central Tunisia. 

Mr. van Kersbergen holds an MSc in Technical Physics from Delft University of Technology, Netherlands in 1988. He enjoys running, playing the piano and spending time in the Swiss Alps.
